Madrid Tournament :The 7th March saw the Barcelona Gaels club travel in big numbers to madrid, with a Gaels and Enda's team on the men's side and a strong Gaelettes team. Both squads came into the Madrid tournament with high hopes having put in the hard work, training together throughout the winter and integrating new members into the squad. The endas acquitted themselves well but were unable to top their group when coming up against a strong O'Donnell's team, on the day captain Lucas Gonthier had a strong showing which he will surely build on for coming tournaments. The Gaelettes battled hard - demonstrated by Katie Aughney's black eye - and were unlucky to come out on the wrong side against a strong Zaragoza team who just missed out in the final against Madrid who continue to be the team to beat. The Gaels team started slowly against Madrid but didn't take long to find their rhythm against Madrid with Max Thiemann burying a penalty to seal the win. A loss against Valencia meant that it was essential to come up with victories against Madrid and Valencia which were duly delivered to set up a final with Madrid. In the final both teams served up an unbelievable game with the Gaels just pulling away at the end after great work from John O'Keefe to set up a goal for the MVP Ruaidhri Duignan. There were many great performances on the day, not least one of the great individual displays from Madrid's no.14 giving a display of point scoring. Sean Fagan dug deep to put a couple of early misses behind him and Mairtin rolled back the years to shore up the full back line. In the end the Gaels brought it home for our first men's trophy in seven years and hopefully the first of a successful year for the club.
